Note from site host: Wow, this calendar is currently tough to read, isn’t it? This is because the calendar has been ported to a new website. New posted events from here on in will direct to the new site–so you’ll only have to tolerate this for a little bit :)

ENDING: Solution Loans Short Story Competition (UK)*

March 31, 2017

The Solution Loans Short Story Competition is for fictional stories of 1500-2500 words about someone getting a loan for a very specific purpose. Stories must be by UK writers over the age of 18. The winner will receive online publication and £200, and three runners-up will receive £50 each.

More information here. This event is hosted by @SolutionLoanUK.

*Please note that this event has been flagged as possible “exploitation” of writers, as it will likely be used to help the host company sell personal loans. However, when contacted about this issue, the company replied with the message below:

“The idea to sponsor a Short Story competition actually came from one of our employees who is a keen writer, and regularly enters competitions in her spare time. We thought it was a great idea, so offered to support it.

Finance can be a pretty dull area so we’re always looking for new ideas and ways to link to our Solution Loans brand. It’s just a form of sponsorship really – a bit like Costa and Bailey’s sponsoring book awards!

Yes, there are prizes – £200 for the winner and 3 x £50 for runners up. Only the four winning entries will be published on the website, and if a writer has a concern about that then I’m sure we could have a separate discussion. There’s no question about us gaining free content. We already employ a number of freelance writers to produce our blog and social media posts.

Hopefully aspiring writers will see it as an opportunity to have their work recognised and published and win a cash prize. We’ve already had a number of entries but looking forward to receiving more before the 31st March closing date.

Alex Silverman, Competition Co-Ordinator”
